Fish & Chips Co – Should thank SABC for banning its ad.
This is such a shoddy piece of marketing work that the Fish&ChipsCo should thank SABC for not flighting the ad.
To be clear I dont support the idea of direct censorship by SABC without allowing citizens to see the ad and complain to ICASA etc.
Whilst SABC maybe be kissing Zuma’s ass, it still doesn’t confer that the ad is creatively useful as a piece of marketing.
Now if you tell me that the ad will convince their primary target audience to buy the “shabba” fish & chips special than we Are talking about an ad that will add value.
The creative effect & prowess of the ad are non existent. Quite honestly making content that is mocking a public figure can definitely be seen as topical but it’s hardly creative or useful.
I think it’s creatively bankrupt and combines what was probably a creative/topical type idea in the Nandos mould with a food special that is driven by the popularity of Kaizer Chiefs star Simphiwe “Shabba” Tshabalalaand its affordability.
How is that connected to Zuma and his constitutional right to be polygamous and have a large family. Its a shoddy excuse for creativity.
It doesn’t help that Mdu the cartoonist has also been receiving stick about releasing a tribalist which was pure vitriol against Tsonga speaking people. In this infamous cartoon a “black Jesus” discovers that he is Tsonga, he tries everything from scrubbing himself and eventually he tries suicide to escape from being Shangaan.
Using humour in your ads should not hurt your brand. Who’s the target audience here -Zuma represents a real constituency they may be rural & location based but they exist and I can bet you they buy more fish and chips than the middle class people who”ll be laughing but not buying.
I guess having Paul Warner as PR point is also a blunder. Its like here we go again with “white humour” that reasonably comes off as offensive to the majority.
I suspect its mis-timed the country is on fire right now racial and political tensions seem to be reaching a crescendo, this evidenced by simmering heat of mining, trucking, farming sectors and tone of conversation in the media( all Media). Its timing may just be the undoing and I suppose, people are exhausted with the zuma conversation.
This will hurt them at a till! Guranteed. Just a view
